The history of the FK 87 Grasshopper Chair
The FK 87 Grasshopper Chair is an iconic piece of Danish modernist furniture design, created by architect Finn Juhl in 1951. A refinement of Viggo Boesen's original 1938 Grasshopper Chair design, the FK 87 exemplifies Juhl's innovative, sculptural approach to furniture making.
Juhl, considered one of the pioneers of Danish modern design, was known for his artful blending of ergonomics and aesthetics. In the FK 87, this manifests in a sinuous, insect-like silhouette supported by a gracefully curved solid oak frame. The chair's swooping, asymmetrical lines and voluptuous seat create a sense of movement and organic fluidity, while the robust wooden base provides sturdy support.
Beyond its striking visual presence, the FK 87 Grasshopper Chair was also acclaimed for its exceptional comfort and ergonomics. Juhl meticulously shaped the seat and backrest to cradle the sitter's body, allowing for extended periods of relaxation. The chair's adjustable headrest further enhanced its user-centric design.
