Instructions

Preparation

Before applying the Tung Oil ensure the surface is dry, clean and dust free.

Indoor wood: Use our Wood Cleaner to remove the dirt and grime.

Outdoor wood: Use our Teak Cleaner to remove the dirt and grime. The Teak Cleaner will also help to restore the colour if the wood is looking grey.

If there are any old residues of finish, varnish or wax on the wood wipe it down with White Spirit to remove these.

Application

Shake the bottle well before use. If you are unsure of the finish, test it on an unseen area first.

Apply the Tung Oil liberally to a lint-free cloth and rub into the wood following the direction of the grain. Leave for a few minutes and then wipe off any excess. Leave the Tung Oil to thoroughly soak in and dry for 24 hours.

If you are applying Tung Oil for the first time you can mix the first coat 1:1 with White Spirit to help penetration into the wood. Do not dilute subsequent coats.

Bare Wood: If you are applying Tung Oil to bare wood for the first time you’ll need to apply three coats initially. Wait until the first coat has thoroughly dried (24 hours) before applying the second coat of Tung Oil.

If you’re just topping up a previously oiled surface only one application is necessary.

Maintenance

You should reapply the Tung Oil as soon as you see signs of it wearing off. This would usually be when the wood starts to look dry. Otherwise, reapply the Tung Oil annually to keep your wood well maintained.
