How to choose the right filler to repair leather damages

Leather Repair Filler

Our Repair Filler is a safe, water-based leather filler designed for use on all types of leather to fill damaged areas or any missing sections on the leather. It is perfect for repairing cracks, tears, burns, wear and holes, and any other damage. It is a thick, paste-like filler that is highly pliable, making it suitable for high-use areas to create a durable, long-lasting repair.

How to Use

The filler is a thick, paste-like repair compound. When applying, simply use a putty knife or palette knife to spread the filler over the damaged area on the leather, being sure to remove any excess filler from the leather surface during the filling process to avoid overfilling the surrounding leather texture.

Drying Time

Drying time depends on the thickness of the applied coat. We recommend applying several thin layers of the filler, gradually building up the filler until it is flush with the leather surface. Using this method to repair leather damage, you can use a hair dryer to speed up the drying time to around 5 minutes per coat. If allowing to air dry naturally, you should allow around 1 hour between each filler layer.

If applying just one thick coat of the filler, it will require 24 hours of drying time.

Available Colours

The filler comes in black and white, but the white filler can be tinted by adding up to 10% leather dye (in a colour matching the surrounding leather) to change the colour. Using a coloured filler can reduce the amount of leather dye needed to cover the repair, saving time and avoiding potential texture differences from over-coating.

Sanding Smooth

Once the filler is fully dried, it can be sanded to ensure a smooth, even finish to the leather. If the filler is quite rough, start with 320 grit wet/dry sandpaper, then finish with 1200 grit. If not too rough, you can go straight to 1200 grit. For the smoothest finish, wipe down with an alcohol-based cleaner after sanding.

For the best repair result, you can use our Leather Texture Restorer. Simply apply this over the dried filler to replicate the surrounding leather texture.

Colour Coating

You will need to apply leather dye over the filler to blend the repair into the surrounding leather.

This leather repair filler is suitable for repairing all types of leather items, from furniture (sofas) and automotive interiors to clothing, shoes, bags, and even equestrian leathers.
