The history of the PK 25 Chair
The PK25 Chair is a celebrated modernist furniture design, created by the renowned Danish architect and designer Poul Kjærholm in 1958. Characterized by its sleek, minimalist silhouette and innovative use of materials, the PK25 exemplifies Kjærholm's distinctive design philosophy, which sought to elevate industrial processes to the level of fine art.
Kjærholm, who was a central figure in the golden age of Danish modernism, conceived the PK25 as a refined, almost sculptural expression of functionality. The chair's simple, linear frame is crafted from a single, continuous length of stainless steel, which gracefully curves to support the sitter's body. The seat and backrest are then composed of a single sheet of woven cane, lending the design a striking, almost architectural presence.
Beyond its visual impact, the PK25 Chair was also acclaimed for its exceptional comfort and ergonomics. Kjærholm's meticulous attention to the chair's proportions and construction ensured that it provided excellent lower back support and freedom of movement for the sitter.
